Beautiful Portraits of Children Enjoying the Outdoors by Adrian Murray

Last December, Adrian Murray discovered Elena Shumilova‘s portfolio on 500px and was inspired to get serious about photography. Although he had been around cameras his entire life, her portraits made him see possibilities beyond just point-and-shoot, especially as a father photographing his children.

As a dental student, Adrian couldn’t spend all day improving his photography, but he did start to learn as much as he could during his free time. He was motivated by his children, who were growing up quickly.

“I took pictures in the past, but never with a purpose,” he says. “It wasn’t until I had something I wanted to document forever that I was motivated to continually shoot.”

Now, photography has become a large part of family life for Adrian. Rather than being distracted from his family by his camera, or vice versa, he’s learned how to naturally integrate photography with regular family outings.

“Whenever we leave the house and let the children explore, I make sure to bring my camera gear,” he says. “This allows my children to learn about the world while I capture their wonder, amazement, and joy.”

His photos certainly capture the beauty of childhood, exploring and playing outside. We asked Adrian a few questions about his experience with photography and shooting portraits outdoors.

What do you enjoy most about photographing children?
I love a good challenge, and photographing children is always a good challenge. They’re constantly moving and produce a sliver of a moment that can be the perfect shot. It’s up to us as photographers to capture that perfect moment.

You really capture the atmosphere of country living in your portraits. Do you draw any inspiration from your home state, Kentucky?
Funny thing, while I love the country feel Kentucky offers, we aren’t actually from here. We moved hear a year ago for dental school.

I draw most of my inspiration from my kids. My goal is to capture what childhood is like, or at least what I feel it should be like.

What do you like about taking portraits in the countryside? What advice would you give new photographers about taking portraits outdoors?
I love being able to have built-in backgrounds and lighting that you can only get outdoors or out of the city.

The one thing that anyone should learn when starting out with photography is how to see light. I don’t mean see its tone or how hard/soft it is, but to see how light interacts with your subject and their surroundings.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned about photography so far?
I would have to say that one of the most important things I’ve learned about photography is that even with flaws, there are still great images.

One of my most treasured photographs from my collection is of my son and our dog. To me, that image was perfect. It captured my son’s raw happiness for his puppy.

The only problem was that the dog was slightly out of focus. I decided it didn’t matter and shared it with the world anyways. I think that’s the lesson we should all take: even with the flaws, come great images.

Mr. Murray, I just found your photos by accident, and I’m thrilled to have been able to see them. The photos are gold. They have everything they need to create the perfect image. The balance, color, subject matter and most of all love & passion. The babies are all so gorgeous as well. I was particularly intrigued by the subject matter. I’ve lost all my children many years ago and the photos that I have are so precious to me. Your work is a spiritual journey and you have completely captivated my soul as both an artist and a mother.… Read more »
