Classic B&W Portraits of Cigar Smokers by Joe Giacomet (and his behind-the-scenes lighting plan)

Joe Giacomet has just finished shooting a set of classic B&W portraits for Cigar Sanctum, a jewellery company for cigar smokers. The people he photographed were not models but actual dedicated cigar smokers who were also interesting characters in their own right. In his selection of subjects, Joe shows how, in the world of cigars, a seemingly unrelated group of people can come together based on their love of cigars.

Behind the Scenes
Joe set up the lighting with an 8k soft-light suspended above the character which was bounced in with a variety of silver and white reflectors. He filled in any deep shadows with a beauty dish directly in front of the characters and a small soft-box gives a graduated look to the background. The lighting plan not only made the subject look great but also brought out the finer details of the thick cigar smoke.

The background was scenic painted to give a look somewhere between that of a classic canvas backdrop and a piece of weathered concrete. Subtle details of texture were used to create a more interesting and unique feel.
