Fire and Water – Nature Photography by Nick Selway

Nick Selway has had a deep appreciation for nature ever since he was a young boy growing up along the Northern Cascade Mountains in Washington. He took his first photography class in 2002, at Northern Idaho College, where he met two photography professors who changed his life. With their encouragement, he realized that photographing nature was his lifelong passion. After graduating, he moved to Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii and started photographing the incredible beauty of Hawaiian surf and volcanoes.

Nick has been called a “daredevil photographer” because of the life-threatening risks he takes for great photos. For example, he was one of the first photographers to capture the moment when lava hits the ocean surf. To get these unique photos, he had to expose himself to near-scalding water and avoid lava bombs exploding close by. Compared to this danger, his peaceful pictures of curling ocean waves seem like a cinch.
