Life with a Pet Fawn – Beautiful Portraits of a Girl and Her Baby Deer

One morning a few years ago, an orphaned fawn came into the life of Emily (called *Emmy*Lee on Flickr), whose interest in photography prompted her to show her new pet to the world.

The fawn seemed about a day old when she was found, with beautiful blue eyes and a tendency to snuggle. Emily struggled with finding an appropriate name, considering Ivy or Fern before settling with Mia.

Mia wouldn’t sleep unless she was in someone’s arms, so Emily would sometimes need to multitask with a deer in her lap. “She’s been asleep on my lap for the past several hours while I edit pics,” Emily writes under one of her photos.

Such a trusting and beautiful fawn was easy to love. Emily and her family doted on Mia, but the fawn still seemed to be sad sometimes. One day, Emily’s dad asked her to come into the yard to check on Mia, who wasn’t moving. “What’s wrong with her?” Emily asked.
“She misses her mother,” her dad said.

Once Emily went outside and started to pet Mia, though, the fawn cheered up and began to play again.

Besides taking everyday photos of Mia, Emily also arranged a few creative photo shoots with her and the fawn. Sometimes, these photo shoots went really well. Mia Emily would spin around in her dress, and Mia would start skipping and hopping in circles. “She had me laughing the whole time, ” Emily writes under one photo. “She’s a nut.”

Sometimes, though, the photo shoot did not go as smoothly as Emily had imagined. For the previous photo with the tents, which seems so peaceful, she writes: “Everything that could’ve gone wrong on this shoot went wrong.” The remote wasn’t working, and Mia was full of energy, preferring running around the field to staying still for the camera.

Then, Emily cut her hand on one of the decorative glass lanterns. “Oh well. So is life,” she writes. “I had fun though.”

When Mia was still quite young, one of her quirks was her love of sucking on ears. “I assume it’s in a way like a pacifier to a human baby,” Emily explains. “Anyways, that’s what she’s doing in almost all the photos I’ve gotten of us together.”

Eventually, Mia began to lose her blue eyes and little white spots, becoming a full-grown deer. Emily still enjoyed taking photos with her, but the photos made her feel a twinge of nostalgia. “I can’t believe that little ear-sucking fawn that used to sleep in my arms is almost 5 months old,” she writes.

Of course, teenagers have their own quirks, too, even with deer. For this photo shoot with a mirror, Mia kept trying to play with her reflection, the deer in the mirror. “Oh boy, the teenage years have arrived,” Emily writes.

Although Emily no longer updates her photostream with pictures, this brief series captures a special time of beauty, bonding and growth, as a family and an orphaned deer adopt each other.
