Valiente † – Portraits of a Grandfather by Glorianna Ximendaz
Glorianna Ximendaz was born in 1992 in Costa Rica and grew up with two inspiring role models, her grandparents. “They helped the sick, the homeless, prostitutes, alcoholics and abused children,” Glorianna writes. Their commitment to supporting the weak and vulnerable influenced Glorianna personally as well as professionally. Documentaries and photojournalism have become her passions because they give a voice to the powerless; it’s a mission she learned at an early age from her grandparents.
Her series ‘Valiente †‘ (or ‘Brave’) documents her grandfather’s final days and struggle against cancer, and is a tribute to his courage and great character. The final page of the book version, which includes writings and quotes, summarizes the spirit of her grandfather: “Glorianna, look me in the eye, we carry braveness in our blood.”
