Who are the backpackers?

IamaBackPacker_400x400We want to share a special guest post by Andy-Riwan Gernet, a French backpacker who will chronicle his year long trip to Australia on his website, I AM A BACKPACKER. What makes Andy’s journey special is the fact that he will share stories and photos of other backpackers he’ll meet on his journey. We hope to bring you series of updates from Andy, with some of the highlights of his trip, both stories and photos.
Andy: “I am a backpacker” is a project focused on backpackers who are doing a road trip around Australia. The idea is to meet them, take pictures of them and recreate in one year the story of backpackers, through little moments, emotions, feelings, that backpackers have during their experiences. Backpackers are all different and that’s why they have all different stories to share”.

Viola and Miky: “Finally we found a place where it is possible for young people like us, to enjoy the life and think about the future” Caroline: “If I feel bad somewhere, I am not afraid to go somewhere else and this way I learn a lot about myself”

Do you know the backpackers? Those travelers road tripping around the world in a nomadic way, hoping for human experiences and discoveries. Every year they are thousands to embark on the adventure. Some travel for a few weeks while others decide to extend their trip for months or years.

Maud, 25 year old French – 170 days in Australia. Maud: “For me being in Australia means ‘Freedom’. But being free doesn’t mean being alone”

But who are the backpackers? How do they travel? What are they doing? How do they fund their road trip? Why do they decide to go, sometimes from one day to the next? What do they learn from their trip?

A secluded place – The Blue House (PERTH) Andy: “Living in the city allow you to find sometime unique and secluded place like this Blue House in Perth”

These are all the questions that needed an answer for Andy-Riwan Gernet, a young 27 years old French traveler who created the project I AM A BACKPACKER. The idea is simple, travel around Australia to meet backpackers and tell their experiences.

iambackpacker_Broome

Broome – Western Australia. Andy: “Our freedom is embodied by the ability to rise up. How many time, do we realize we confine ourselves to a routine, that our way is becoming more narrow and perspective of change are decreasing. People can be afraid by the change as it comes with many questions and a part of unknown. What do I have to change ? What should I keep or leave ? Am I able to do it and succeed ? The change can bring new problems but how many problems did you solve in your life ? All those problems you managed to solve made you stronger and helped you to become the person you are today. Chinese proverb : ‘More you are rising up, further you can see'”

These are all the questions that needed an answer for Andy-Riwan Gernet, a young 27 years old French traveler who created the project ‘I AM A BACKPACKER’. The idea is simple, travel around Australia to meet backpackers and tell their experiences.

Andy: "ALIVE ! When curves of the mountain are breaking the strict line between sky and sea, it make the landscape more terrific and alive. That's a word that I've heard only once still I'm meeting backpackers. The boy told me that he was feeling more alive since he did a road trip as a backpacker. Why ? Because he managed to get over a painful love story, forgetting little by little day after day. Road tripping was the best way to keep away all thoughts and start a new life !"

‘I’m usually mostly traveling as a backpacker and it is unforgettable memories that I bring with me. Times when the beauty of the landscapes and encounters we have, make us forget
that we sometimes travel in difficult conditions. But when you ask people to describe who is a backpacker, it is difficult to get a correct answer.

Xavier, 23 year old Canadian – 102 days in Australia. Xavier: "My family doesn't know that I am in Australia. I came here because I had some troubles with my parents and it was too hard for me to stay there. I know that I am not here for a long time, but I am here for a good time. So I try to make every day as a great one"

One country that welcomes every year an important number of backpackers is Australia. And here again, I started with a simple observation. We often talk about this country as a dream country in which it is easy to live and travel. But then, who is sharing adventures of these young travelers, who they are, what they feel? They are French, Italians, Germans, Americans, Canadians, Japanese, Chinese, Koreans … and now they are also part of the history of this country.’

Good Night Australia! Andy: "Last night a 60 years old lady joined our fire to have a talk with us. She was travelling around Australia with her husband. She told us that she would have loved to do that when she was younger but her parents pushed them to get responsabilities, childrens and house first. Her husband and she followed her parents advices but today they regret it. Now, they are doing the dream that they had when they were younger but they can't do many things they would have loved to. So she told us to follow our dream and always to be proud of what we are doing now, travelling as a backpacker. I can't be more agree with her"

During one year, Andy-Riwan will work and travel as a backpacker through theses vast territories to meet backpackers and try to know their experiences and feelings. They are all different in their nationality, religion, desires, personality, but one thing put them all closer: travel. Traveling is often a way of life that changes a person forever and much more when you decide to make a one-year travel experience. These are moments of life, moments of
their stories that travelers will share with me and all these stories taken together will create the great story of backpackers. A story in which they all participate in their own way, through their moments of sharing and emotions. All that give rhythm to the life of a backpacker and makes it an unforgettable experience for them but also for everybody they meet.

This is great. It reminds me of the time I backpacked through New Zealand staying in hostels. I wish I could have done it with another person to share experiences with but I took my camera and I get to relive the experience every time I look a the photos
